FROM THE HELM
Welcome to the May 2010 edition of The Dream Begins in Perth!
Things are really buzzing at the Perth 2011 office and the pace just continues to quicken. There are now only 83 weeks to go before the Perth 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships!
With the summer sailing season behind us, the work for the Perth International Regatta (the test event for the World Championships) begins in earnest. In addition, the next Emerging Nations Programme (ENP) Camp commences this week, with 11 athletes from 8 different nations attending. This is another positive step in the careers of these talented athletes, who have the dream of sailing in Perth 2011 next year! Add to this Perth 2011's new sponsorship drive, which is beginning to take shape (announcements due this week) and you can see that winter is going to be even more hectic for the Perth 2011 team!
It is now about 30 weeks till the Perth International Regatta. Perth 2011 is seeking hundreds of volunteers to assist during this regatta in every area imaginable – meeting and greeting athletes and officials, accreditation staff, measuring staff, race management, recording results, driving boats, loaning boats, manning gates, looking after hospitality or general hands... the opportunities are endless! This regatta will be held off Fremantle between the 16 - 21 November, 2010 on the same waters as the World Championships.
It is great fun to be involved in such an exciting Event as the World Championships – this is not only an Australian first but it is also the main Olympic qualifier for the 2012 London Olympic Games Sailing Regatta. I encourage you to get your family, friends and colleagues together and be part of this once-in-a-lifetime experience. To volunteer please visit the website (perth2011.com) and click on the Volunteers section - www.perth2011.com/getinvolved_volunteers. Several training programmes are being coordinated through Yachting WA for people who are interested in assisting in the race management side. (Please see the story in this edition)
This month's enewsletter is full of useful information, so please enjoy the May edition of The Dream Begins in Perth!
Best wishes,
John Longley

WESTERN AUSTRALIA'S MAGNIFICENT FLORA AND FAUNA
Nature lovers will enjoy exploring Australia’s South West - beautiful wildflowers, vast forests, and unique wildlife.
The Stirling Range National Park near Albany is home to 1,500 species of plants, and 100 types of birds. Nearby, the Porongurup Range National Park is also great for birdwatchers and both parks have plenty of walk trails and picnic areas. Some of the most majestic Western Australian forests are the karri and marri forests of the Beedelup and Warren National Parks, surrounding Pemberton.
Further south, the Valley of the Giants Tree Top Walk and Ancient Empire grove near Walpole rises to 40 metres above the forest floor. Additionally, there is the Bibbulmun Track (one of the world’s longest walk trails), the Cape to Cape track from Cape Leeuwin to Cape Naturaliste and the Munda Biddi Trail.

Good Nutrition Vital for Athletes
By Emerging Nations Programme Head Coach Belinda Stowell OAM (pictured)
With the Emerging Nations Programme, we have sailors from many different nations and backgrounds, and have to accommodate many different diets!
When in Perth the sailors train with Western Australian sailors, many who are part of the Western Australia Institute of Sport (WAIS), which is supported by the ” Go for 2 and 5” campaign. This is a 'great start for great nutrition', aiming to eat at least 2 fruit and 5 vegetable servings each day. Add to this protein and carbohydrates, with a small amount of fat and you have a great balance of food intake!

MESSAGE ON A BOTTLE
The Plastiki, the 60ft catamaran constructed of more than 12,000 discarded plastic water bottles, has been at sea for a month. Having departed from San Francisco, The Plastiki has travelled over 2,800 nautical miles in her epic 11,000 mile sail towards her destination of Sydney, Australia.
Perth 2011 supports The Plastiki - it aligns with Perth 2011’s commitment to its environmental and sustainability programme. Perth 2011 will deliver a high quality World Championship that will have minimal environmental impact and leaves a lasting legacy for the sport of sailing and the Western Australian environment for years to come.
The Plastiki expedition, led by environmentalist banking heir David de Rothschild, with a crew including several scientists, aims to highlight the degradation of the Pacific from indiscriminate waste disposal.
