 FROM THE HELM
SAILING GREATS: (L-R) Perth 2011 Event Director John Longley, Perth 2011 Ambassador John Bertrand and Perth 2011 Board Member Skip Lissiman in Perth last week. All three helped sail America’s Cup yacht Australia II to victory, in 1983.
We were thrilled to have Perth 2011 Ambassador John Bertrand in our city last week. John attended a packed Media Conference on the eve of the 33rd America’s Cup. See the full story later in this February 2010 edition of The Dream Begins in Perth!
With less than two years to go, the level of activity is ‘cranking up’. The third Emerging Nations (ENP) Intensive Training Session begins today and we are delighted with the standard of the athletes. The third ENP will culminate in a small regatta on Centre Course, in conjunction with the 2010 Australian RS:X Class Regatta.
The Notre Dame University’s (NDU) new education building, which will house the Regatta administration, is forging ahead and we are incredibly fortunate to have the strong support of NDU, with their excellent facilities.
It’s been a windy summer and those planning to look at what they may have to sail in, will soon be able to view the wind speed and direction on the course directly from the new Perth 2011 weather station on our website. Thanks to Transfield who erected the equipment. Your support is greatly appreciated.
Remember that The Dream Begins in Perth!

Best wishes,
John Longley
Perth 2011 Event Director

THIRD ENP INTENSIVE TRAINING SESSION KICKS OFF
SPEEDING ALONG: Perth 2011 ENP RS:X athletes compete at the Inaugural ENP Regatta, held in December 2009, on Fremantle waters.
The third Emerging Nations Programme (ENP) Intensive Training Camp kicks off today, from Fremantle Sailing Club. Eleven athletes, 10 who have attended one or both of the previous training sessions, are back for another opportunity to learn from two of the best – ENP Head Coaches Belinda Stowell (2000 Olympic Games Gold Medallist in the 470s) and Arthur Brett (2008 Beijing Olympic Coach for the Australian Sailing Team). Both on and off the water, Stowell and Brett will impress upon the athletes the fitness, dedication, tactical knowledge and confidence required to ‘be the best’.
The sailors hail from 11 different developing sailing nations – Moldova, Colombia, Latvia, India, Malaysia, The Cook Islands, Chinese Taipei, Serbia, Pakistan, Peru and Trinidad and Tobago. Alexander Zimmermann, of Peru, will join the programme for the first time. This session runs till February 25th, culminating in a regatta on Centre Course, which will be held in conjunction with the 2010 Australian RS:X Championships.

 THE PERTH 2011 FLEET EXPANDS
Over the coming months the existing Perth 2011 fleet of two VSR 5.8c (Rigid Hull Inflatable Boats) RHIBs will expand to some 23 vessels. Following an extensive evaluation process, the order for the next 13 RHIBs has been placed, with two suppliers being identified to provide boats in the 5.8m size range – The Wooden Boat Shop, Victoria and Portside Marine, Fremantle. The Wooden Boat Shop acts as the Australian agent for the Slovenian RHIB manufacturer of the VSR range. According to many among the yachting fraternity, 'the VSR is a new generation of RHIB. Its sea handling qualities are better than any other boat of its kind’. Portside Marine, in Yangebup, offered the Rapid 5.8m for evaluation. Five of these vessels will be ordered as their design and robustness is well suited to the tasks that have been identified for the Event. To assist in managing the full
fleet of 13 5.8m vessels, Portside will also supply motors, trailers and access to a local workshop for Perth 2011’s fleet.

 LEARN ABOUT WESTERN AUSTRALIA'S HISTORY
HISTORY LESSON: An Aboriginal man plays a didgeridoo, as people gather in Fremantle to hear his music.
Western Australia's history dates back more than 40,000 years with a rich Aboriginal history, making it one of the oldest lands on Earth.
The Kodja Place Visitor and Interpretive Centre in Kojonup, and the Wardan Aboriginal Cultural Centre in Yallingup offer a glimpse at Western Australia’s Indigenous history and culture. Listen to storytelling, learn how to throw a boomerang, watch traditional dancing and listen to Indigenous music. In Australia’s South West, Albany was first discovered by Captain Vancouver in 1791 and the town was originally set to be the State’s capital, with settlement taking place in 1826. However this was soon moved to the fertile Swan River valley, which is now the site of Perth and Fremantle.
